AI and Your Career: What We're Actually Seeing on the Ground
Sitting across technology recruitment the way we do, we get a front-row seat to how different people are reacting to AI.
And the reactions are fascinating.
There is excitement. There is genuine enthusiasm. But underneath almost every conversation - regardless of seniority, regardless of discipline - there is a quieter question.
What if this gets out of hand? Am I going to have a job in five years?
It's a fair question. And the honest answer is that nobody really knows.
So I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
What I can do is share what we're actually seeing and hearing across the sectors we work in, and where I think things are heading.
These are our observations, not predictions. And at the end - I genuinely want to know what you think.
Software Development: The Sector with the Most Anxiety
And honestly, some of it is warranted.
AI is getting extremely good at writing code. Tools like Cursor and Kiro are changing what a single developer can produce in a day. The pace is not slowing down.
But here's the first thing I'd say to any developer sitting with that anxiety: almost every software engineering role we're filling now asks for someone who understands AI - not necessarily certifications, but genuine working knowledge. Someone who knows the difference between a chatbot and an agent. Someone who has actually used these tools in a real project.
If you're avoiding this space, that is the risk. Not AI itself - your distance from it.
The second thing we're seeing is a clear expansion of scope in what companies expect. Full stack rather than pure front end. Mobile and web rather than one or the other. And the reason this shift is happening faster than it would have five years ago is that AI makes it genuinely achievable.
A strong front-end developer with solid JavaScript skills can now make a real impact in Node on the back end - because the tooling closes the gap faster than ever before.
The third shift is the most important one.
Value is moving towards the things AI can't easily replicate. Consulting. Problem solving. Team collaboration. Ideas generation. Communication.
Think about how you make a major personal decision - buying a house, a significant investment, a big career move. You want someone alongside you. Not because you can't research it yourself, but because human judgment in high-stakes decisions gives us comfort in a way that a tool simply doesn't.
Those interpersonal and advisory skills are harder to learn than a programming language. And they're a lot harder to automate.
That's where I think the biggest shift in AI is heading - and not just in software development.
Manufacturing: A Sector That's About to Get Interesting
There's a broader trend that doesn't get enough attention in the Australian context.
With the global push towards onshoring and the steadily falling cost of robotics, we're likely to see a meaningful resurgence in domestic manufacturing.
This is genuinely exciting. And while the automation of large-scale, repetitive production work will continue to be handled by machines - the humans in that ecosystem are shifting upstream.
R&D. Prototyping. Initial concept. Quality assurance. Testing. Verification and validation.
These are the functions that require human creativity, engineering judgment, and contextual thinking. AI doesn't do those things well. And as manufacturing volumes grow domestically, demand for that kind of skilled work is going to follow.
Aerospace: A Talent Shortage That AI Can't Solve
Aerospace took a significant hit through COVID and many people who left the sector never returned.
Maintaining and repairing aircraft requires physical certification and type ratings. These are not skills you can shortcut, automate, or AI-generate. And demand for air travel has not just recovered - it's growing.
The talent shortage in aircraft maintenance engineering is already at breaking point. AI is not going to fix this. If anything, the gap is widening.
This is a sector where physical, high-stakes, certified technical work is in serious demand and is going to stay that way for a long time.
So What Does This Mean for You?
How AI affects your career depends entirely on your specific role, your sector, and honestly - how you respond to it.
But here's what I keep coming back to.
The skills that are hardest to replicate with AI are the ones that have always been the most human. Advising. Consulting. Problem solving. Building trust. Hands-on technical work where physical presence and certification matter.
Those are not going anywhere.
What is shifting is the baseline expectation. Being technically competent is no longer enough on its own. Companies want people who understand the AI landscape relevant to their field - and who can work alongside these tools intelligently rather than defensively.
So my advice is this: lean in. Get familiar. Become the person in your team who actually understands what these tools can and can't do.
And then double down on the skills that are yours alone.
