Senior Embedded Software Engineer | Rugged IoT Systems

Location: Sydney, NSW 

Position Type: Full-Time Permanent

We are currently representing a fast-scaling Australian IoT company whose technology is transforming how remote infrastructure is monitored and managed across vast, demanding environments.

With thousands of remote monitors currently in the field, their near real-time systems deliver critical insights over satellite, cellular, and long-range networks. They design and build rugged, low-maintenance IoT devices that work straight out of the box in the most remote corners of the globe.

The Opportunity 

We are looking for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to take ownership of an evolving embedded platform. Powering a growing portfolio of low-power, ruggedized IoT products, you will lead the firmware architecture, development, testing, and release. You will work alongside hardware and cloud teams to bring new sensing and control capabilities to life.

About You 

You are a self-starter who takes ownership of outcomes, not just code. You balance deep technical work with high-level systems thinking and thrive in fast-paced environments. You are a confident embedded systems developer who writes clean, maintainable, and scalable code. You are equally comfortable deep-diving into FreeRTOS protocols as you are stepping back to map out a firmware roadmap or mentor junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and support embedded firmware on new and existing products using modern C++ on ARM Cortex-M devices with FreeRTOS.

  • Ensure embedded solutions are robust, reliable, and highly maintainable.

  • Collaborate with in-house and third-party engineers on functional electronic design, validation, and testing.

  • Drive the firmware release pipeline and contribute to continuous integration and test frameworks.

  • Perform rigorous real-world testing and validation of embedded systems to ensure resilience in extreme field conditions.

  • Document architecture, design decisions, and interface specifications.

  • Provide technical leadership and guidance in the firmware space.

Desirable Experience & Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded firmware development using C/C++ on ARM Cortex-M (NXP and STM32 experience is highly regarded).

  • Proficiency in C++ templates, object-oriented programming, and writing memory-efficient code.

  • Solid experience with FreeRTOS, MCUExpresso, Visual Studio, or similar environments.

  • Strong background with hardware interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART) and low-level driver development.

  • Proven experience with telemetry and IoT systems, edge processing, and low-power design.

  • Familiarity with satellite communications (Globalstar, Inmarsat), cellular radios (NB-IoT/Cat M1), Bluetooth, and LoRa is highly desirable.

  • Strong conceptual electronics knowledge, including the ability to read schematics and use test equipment like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.

  • Familiarity with CI/CD practices, Python or C# for testbed development, and tools like AWS, Bitbucket, Confluence, and Jira.

Please note: Due to the collaborative nature of this hardware-focused role, candidates must be based in Sydney.
